What is the "Quilt of Peace"?

The Quilt of Peace is a project by UNESON to promote peace and understanding worldwide. The Quilt is a huge patchwork quilt, created cooperatively by children all around the globe. UNESON asks groups of children in various parts of the world for their ideas of peace and understanding. Then, each group puts their ideas together and designs a patchwork block. These pieces of fabric are then sewn together into the Quilt of Peace, demonstrating the collective need for peace of all people beyond language barriers and all social, aesthetic and national differences. So far, more than 5.000 patchwork blocks have been made, creating a quilt the size of a quarter soccer field.

How does the project work?

UNESON cooperates with schools and various other institutions. In schools participating in the project, peace and intercultural communication are topics of discussion in classes like Religion, History or English. Together, each class designs it's own patchwork block, contributing to the Quilt of Peace. Each patch is being photographed, so that the students can find their work on the associated website and are able to show it to others. In doing so, all participating students become UNESON ambassadors of peace and spread the message of peace and understanding. The project is accompanied by the UNESON city tour, presenting the Quilt of Peace and the ideals forming the basis of UNESON to the public. In this city tour UNESON hosts block parties, during which the participating schools can articulate their ideas and collect funds for their "heart's desire" - a cause that they want to promote particularly.
